School District Van Driver GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The School District Van Driver is responsible for transporting students to and from special programs, schools, and activities.
He/she will also perform other errands and special assignments as needed.
WAGE CATEGORY:
Grade A.
Non-Exempt (hourly) TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Per School Board and Support Staff Agreement if position exceeds 20 hours per week; otherwise, per current Handbook for Non-Union Support Staff Personnel.
REPORTS TO:
Special Education Director EVALUATION:
Performance in this position will be evaluated annually, in person and in writing, by the Special Education Director with input from the Special Educators.
This evaluation process will be consistent with the process described in the School Board/Support Staff Agreement if position exceeds 20 hours per week; otherwise, per current Handbook for Non-Union Support Staff Personnel.
Qualifications:
Valid Driver's License.
Good driving skills and record.
Experience in driving in all kinds of weather.
Knowledge of relevant equipment, Colchester School District policies and procedures, and federal and state laws and regulations related to transportation.
Dependability, punctuality, and flexibility.
Good physical health, with no problems or impairments that might impair driving skills.
Physical stamina and strength to lift up to 100 pounds.
Ability to be patient, courteous, and authoritative in dealing with students Ability and willingness to maintain strict confidentiality regarding school district business.
Commitment to the School Districts mission and Strategic Plan.
PERFORMANCE
Responsibilities:
Transport students in a van to and from various locations, to include neighborhoods, schools, and other activities.
Pick up and drop off students at scheduled locations, following established time schedules.
Interact with students on the bus in alignment with behavior plans and student needs; implement appropriate behavior modification plans for students on the bus to de-escalate behavior problems in order to ensure student safety.
Follow all safe driving rules and comply with regulations regarding students entering and exiting the bus, as well as when students must cross the street at the bus stop.
Maintain knowledge of any changes/ updates that occur regarding regulations and rules.
Keep mileage logs and records as required and submit to the Special Education Director.
Perform daily maintenance inspection before driving the van.
Check the condition of van tires, windshield wipers, lights, mirrors, safety equipment, etc.
, to ensure all are in working order.
Report any malfunctions or problems to appropriate personnel.
Effectively handle complaints, settle disputes and conflicts.
Bring unusual or difficult situations to the attention of the Special Education Director.
Demonstrate a spirit of teamwork and open communication in completing all tasks.
Provide personal assistance, medical attention, emotional support, or other personal care to students in alignment with student behavior plans as needed.
Assume other additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by designated supervisors.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
